The Spanish built the city of New Mexico on the site of Tencotitlan and the Incan capital of Cusco was not destroyed but instead captured and used by the Spanish. As well as expanding their empires these new lands offered a wide range of new products such as Turkey, tobacco, tomatoes and maize which were luxuries for people in Europe. As well as food products there were also a large amount of raw materials such as gold and silver which was mined ny native slaves and sent back to Europe. This increased the wealth and prestige of Spain and Portugal as they could trade these goods for large amount of money. Spain and Portugal were both Christian countries and forced this religion upon the natives, therefore it spread quickly throughout South America. The Europeans knowledge of the planet improved drastically during this time. They no longer believed the world was flat or that there were monsters in the sea. They also discovered new and more efficient farming methods such as irrigation.
