Chapter 2: Digestion and Enzymes

In this chapter you will learn:

  1. Digestion

  2. The five stages in human eating

  3. The different areas of the digestive system and what they do

  4. Enzymes

Digestion
  • Digestion is the break down of food

  • There are two types of digestion. These are physical and mechanical

  • Physical Digestion- Physical digestion involves the breaking down of food with teeth

  • Chemical digestion- Chemical digestion involves the use of enzymes to break down food

Stages in human eating and digestion:
  1. Food taken in through the mouth

  2. Food is broken down and absorbed into blood

  3. The blood moves circulates the body and distributes the broken down food

  4. Food used by cells in the body

  5. Waste or unwanted material is removed (excreted) from digestive system

The Parts of the digestive system and their function:

Exam Tip: In the exam you will be asked to both label the different parts of the digestive system and state the function of each one

Part:                            Function:

The Mouth:   Physical and chemical digestion

Osephagus: Connects the stomach to the mouth

Stomach: Physical and chemcial digestion

Pancreas: Produces digestive fluids

Liver: Produces bile for digestion of fats

Small intestine: -Absorption of nutrients into the blood

                            - Chemical digestion

Large Intestine: -Water Absorption

                            -Elimination of undigested food

Enzyme:
  • An enzyme is a biological catalyst meaning it speeds up the process of food digestion without being used up in the process. e.g Amylase
