Chapter 9 Living Things:

  • A species is a group of living things that are able to breed

  • An individual living thing is known as an organism. All organisms are made of units called cells

  • Ecology is the part of biology which studies how living things interact and depend on one another

  • The 7 life processes or charecteristics of a living things are

  1. Growth

  2. Movement

  3. Nutrition

  4. Respiration

  5. Excretion

  6. Response

  7. Reproduction

  • A good way of remembering these 7 processes is through the acronym MEN GRRR or Mrs Gren

Explanation for the 7 life processes:
  1. Growth: All living things can grow if they have enough nutrients to allow for that growth

  2. Movement: All living things have the ability to move even plants move into the direction of the sun

  3. Nutrition: All living things need nutrients to grow. Animals get nutrition from plants or other animals. Plants get nutrients from the air-Carbon Dioxide and soil-water

  4. Respiration: During respiration animals extract energy from their food by taking in oxygen

  5. Excretion: All living things must remove all waste that builds up through excretion

  6. Response: All living things must be able to detect what is around them using their senses

  7. Reproduction: All living things will eventually die. If they do not reproduce they will become extinct

  • Living things are sub-divided into plants and animals

  • Plants have the follwoing features: Leaves, branches, stem, roots, flowers, fruits etc

  • Animals are sub-divided into verebrates and inverebrates

  • Vertebrates have a backbone e.g. Snakes, dogs, humans etc

  • Invertebrates do not have a backbone e.g snails, jellyfish, starfish etc

  • A key can often be used to identify palnts and animals

Plants and Animals:
Snakes are in fact vertebrates even though it doesn't appear they have a backbone
Starfish unlike snakes do not have any backbone
